The Popup
A popup is a small window that appears on top of your website when someone visits. It is the place for something you really want visitors to notice: this week's offers, a link to your outlet, your latest news, or a newsletter signup that rewards new subscribers with a discount code.
You build it under Design → Popup, from a few simple blocks. There is no code and no design work involved: the popup automatically uses the colours, fonts and rounded corners of your theme, so it always looks like part of your website.
The popup with blocks is available for websites that run on a custom theme. Does your website use one of the standard designs? Then you will not see the Popup item in the menu.
How visitors see it
- Once per visitor. A visitor sees the popup one time. After closing it, it stays away on every page and on later visits.
- Shown again after a change. Every time you save the popup, it counts as new: every visitor sees it once more. Swap the image of your weekly offer, save, and everyone sees the new one.
- Below the cookie notice. On a first visit, the cookie notice stays on top. If it covers the popup, the popup does not count as seen yet, so it appears in full once the visitor has made their cookie choice.
- Easy to close. Visitors close it with the close button, by clicking next to it, or with the Escape key. Clicking a button or link in the popup closes it as well.
Turning it on or off
At the top of the screen is a single Show popup switch. Turn it on, add at least one block and save. Turn it off and the popup disappears from your website, while everything you set up stays saved for next time.
Display
- Position: show the popup in the centre of the screen (the page behind it darkens), or as a smaller card at the bottom right that leaves the page usable.
- Delay: show it straight away, or after a few seconds so visitors first get a look at your page.
- Name for screen readers: a short name, such as "Offers this week". It is not shown in the popup, but it is read out to visitors who use a screen reader.
Building the content
The content is a stack of blocks, shown from top to bottom. Add blocks with the buttons under Add block, change their order with the arrows, and remove them with the bin icon. A preview next to the editor shows roughly how the popup will look. On your website it uses your theme's own fonts and colours.
You can use up to twelve blocks, but a popup works best when it is short: an image, a heading, one or two sentences and a button.
Heading
A title in a large or small size, for example "Outlet up to 50% off".
Text
A few sentences of plain text. Line breaks are kept, so you can put a short list on separate lines.
Image
An image from your media library, for example a banner for this week's offer. Add a description of the image for visitors who cannot see it. You can make the image clickable: link it to one of your pages or to a web address.
Button
A button with your own text that links to one of your pages (for example your outlet or offers page) or to a web address. Choose a prominent or a subtle style. You can add a second button for another destination.
Buttons link to the page itself, not to its address. If you later rename a page or change its address, the button keeps working. If you unpublish the page, the button disappears from the popup automatically.
News posts
Shows your news posts as small cards with their image and date. Choose Latest to always show your newest one to three posts, or Choose to pick the posts yourself.
Newsletter
A newsletter signup: an email field and a button. New subscribers are added to the same list as your other newsletter forms. You can change the text on the button, for example to "Send me my code".
The block only appears on your website when the newsletter is switched on under Settings → Newsletter. The editor warns you when it is off.
Rewarding new subscribers with a discount code
Do you have an online store? Then the newsletter block can reward new subscribers with a discount, for example "Sign up and get 10% off your next order".
- Add a Newsletter block.
- Choose Percentage discount or Discount in euros and enter the amount.
- Write the offer in a heading or text block above it, so visitors know what they get.
- Save.
This is how it works for your visitors:
- Every new subscriber gets a code of their own. Discount codes in SitePack can be used once, so one shared code would stop working after the first order. The popup creates a new code for every new subscriber.
- The code appears right after signing up, and arrives by email. It is shown on the confirmation screen, with a button to copy it, and the subscriber also gets it in an email from your website, so it is not lost when the page is closed. The visitor enters it at checkout.
- With double opt-in, the code comes after confirming. If you use double opt-in for your newsletter, the visitor first confirms their email address with the link in the email. The code appears on the page that link opens and is emailed right after. That way nobody gets a code with a made-up email address.
- Existing subscribers do not get a new code. An email address that signed up before, through any form, does not receive another code.
The codes appear in your list of discount codes in your online store, like the codes you create yourself. They do not expire on their own. When the offer ends, switch the reward off in the popup, and archive any codes you no longer want to accept.
The discount itself is not printed in the signup block. Add a heading such as "Get 10% off your next order" above it, so visitors immediately see why they should sign up.
Saving
Click Save to put your changes live. Remember that every save shows the popup once more to every visitor, so save when you are done rather than after every small change.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I not see Popup in the menu?
The popup with blocks is available for websites that run on a custom theme. Websites on one of the standard designs do not have this menu item.
I saved the popup but I do not see it on my website. Why?
Check that Show popup is on and that there is at least one block. Did you already see the popup on this device? Then it stays away for you, just as it does for your visitors. Open your website in a private window to see it again.
Can visitors see the popup more than once?
Each version once. When you save a change, every visitor sees the popup one more time.
Does the popup work on mobile?
Yes. The popup adapts to the screen size and can be scrolled when the content is longer than the screen.
My newsletter block does not show on my website.
The newsletter is probably switched off. Turn it on under Settings → Newsletter and the block appears.
Can a visitor get the discount code twice?
No. Only an email address that never signed up before receives a code, and each code can be used once.
What if a subscriber loses the code?
The code is also sent to the subscriber by email, in the language they signed up in, with your website's name and logo. They can look it up there.
Where do I find the discount codes that were handed out?
In the list of discount codes of your online store, together with the codes you created yourself.
Can I set an end date for the discount?
Not yet. Discount codes do not expire on their own. Switch the reward off in the popup when the offer ends, and archive the codes you no longer want to accept.
