Domain Name Holders
Every domain name is registered in the name of a domain name holder: the person or company that legally owns it. The holder's name and address are recorded with the organisation that issues the extension, so they need to be correct and up to date. One holder can hold as many domains as you like.
You manage holders under Settings → Domains → Domain name holders in your Admin Portal.
Choosing a holder when you order
When you order a domain, each domain line in your shopping cart has a Registered to selector. You can:
- pick one of the holders you already have, or
- leave it on The name and address of your invoice details, in which case SitePack creates a holder for you based on the invoice details of your account.
You are never stuck with that choice: the holder of a domain can be changed afterwards.
The holders overview
The Domain name holders page shows a table of all the holders in your account, with per holder:
- the company or the personal name,
- the address,
- the contact details,
- the number of domains registered to that holder.
Each row has an edit button, and at the top of the page you will find the Add domain name holder button.
Adding a holder
- Go to Settings → Domains and open Domain name holders.
- Click Add domain name holder.
- Fill in the form: company, first name, last name, address, postal code, city, country, phone number and email address.
- Save. The new holder can be selected for any domain right away.
Editing a holder
Click the edit button next to a holder to change its details, using the same form. Your changes are passed on to the domain registry automatically, so the official registration matches what you entered.
Correcting a typo in an address or updating a phone number is straightforward. Changing the name of a holder is a bigger deal: the registrar sees it as a different person or company, and it may result in a new registration record for that holder. If the domain should really belong to someone else, it is usually cleaner to add a new holder and assign the domain to them.
Assigning a different holder to a domain
- Go to Settings → Domains and click the cog (Manage) next to the domain.
- Find the Domain holder card. It shows who the domain is currently registered to.
- Click Choose another holder and select the holder you want.
- Confirm with Assign holder.
The domain is now registered in the name of the new holder.
Frequently asked questions
What is a domain name holder, exactly?
It is the person or company in whose name a domain is registered: the legal owner of the name. The details are held by the registry behind the extension, which is why SitePack asks for a full name and address.
What happens if I do not choose a holder?
SitePack creates one from the invoice details of your account, so your domain is always registered to a real name and address.
Can one holder hold several domains?
Yes. The holders overview shows how many domains each holder currently has.
Do I need to inform anyone when my address changes?
No. Edit the holder in the Admin Portal and SitePack passes the change on to the domain registry for you.
Can I transfer a domain to a completely different person?
You can register the domain in the name of another holder: add that person or company as a domain name holder and assign the domain to them from the Domain holder card on the domain details page.
